Since 1980, Mike has been one of the nation’s leading forces in marrying theater and

The Environment in Children’s Literature:
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
From Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax to Bill Peet’s Wump World, Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree
to Jean Craighead George’s Julie of the Wolves, nature and environmental issues have
been a staple of children’s books for a very long time. But all children’s books are not

Writing Down the Earth
Writing is a critically important skill for any educator, naturalist or communicator,
immensely helping advance anyone’s career. And since the 1970s, Mike has been
writing about the environment in two very different venues: newspaper columns and
environmental education publications. In a very hands-on oriented series of activities,
Mike engages participants in writing exercises that allows them to stretch and grow
their writing muscles. You’ll find immense applications in his tips and tricks, including
improving written descriptions in publications, articles for school or center newsletters,
even letters to the editor and guest columns for newspapers. Become a better writer,
